About
My experience in educational and academic publishing spans a wide range of business types and mediums — from entrepreneurial start-ups like Epigeum to established names like Palgrave Macmillan; from textbooks, journals, dictionaries and magazines to cutting-edge online courseware.
This broad background has given me a valuable understanding of many alternative business models, processes and approaches, as well as considerable versatility and a wealth of experience in managing complex projects and complex situations. For example, I was recently moved at short notice to play a crucial role on the bid team that successfully brought in a multi-million pound contract to build a suite of online courses using the edX MOOC platform.
I have a strong grounding in development editing across both print and online, with excellent desk editorial skills and a thorough understanding of what goes into creating genuinely engaging, born-digital interactive content. I relish the opportunity that educational and academic publishing provides to build strong relationships and work closely with leading academics and expert authors across the world.
Editorial management has also formed a significant part of my career: I have enjoyed recruiting, training, mentoring and working alongside many editors over the years, and sharing my experiences of working up through the ranks from Editorial Assistant to Head of Editorial.
My work has required constant liaison with production, web developers, sales and marketing teams (at times overlapping heavily into these roles) and I therefore have a deep understanding of the needs of and interface between departments, as well as the crucial contribution each makes to the business.
Blank canvases do not scare me: I have on two occasions been the first member of a newly created department which has gone on to grow and thrive using the processes, systems and approaches I initiated. I am a creative at heart – but I also have the pragmatism and proactiveness required to translate ideas into workable products, schedules and realities (often with the help of a lot of colour coding!).
